Custom laser cut file design
Custom laser cut files, designed for your material and your machine.
You describe the product; I design a layered SVG and DXF file that assembles exactly as rendered — kerf-compensated for your material and test-cut on a real laser before it reaches you.
Why a drawing is not a laser cut file
Most artwork fails on the bed for the same handful of reasons: paths left open, lines doubled where two shapes meet, joints drawn at nominal size with no allowance for the width the beam removes, and cut and engrave work sitting on the same layer where the machine cannot tell them apart.
None of those are visible in a render. They surface when the parts come off the bed and the tabs will not meet the slots — after you have spent the material.
I design the other way round: from the material thickness and the machine back to the artwork. The kerf allowance is calculated for the material you actually cut, the joints are dimensioned to close, and the layers are separated and labelled before the file leaves my desk.
Who commissions this
- Makers and Etsy sellers who need a product nobody else is cutting
- Shops that want a house range they own outright
- Brands needing packaging, displays or gift items in wood or acrylic
- Workshops that need parts nested to waste less of each sheet
- Anyone whose current file almost works but will not assemble
What you receive
- Layered vector file in SVG, DXF, CDR, AI, EPS and PDF
- Kerf allowance calculated for your material and thickness
- Cut, score and engrave separated onto labelled layers
- Joints dimensioned and test-cut before delivery
- Assembly guide where the product has more than a few parts
- Commercial licence — you may sell what you cut
Example work
Designs from the catalogue, built the same way.
How it runs
From brief to a file that cuts.
- 01
Brief
Tell me the product, its finished dimensions, the material and thickness, and which machine it runs on. A sketch or a photo of something similar is enough to start.
- 02
Draft
I model the geometry and send a render plus the flat layout, so you can check proportions and part count before any cutting happens.
- 03
Test cut
The file goes on the machine. Joints that are tight get opened, parts that flex get thickened, and the kerf value is corrected against the real cut.
- 04
Delivery
You receive every format, layered and labelled, with the material and thickness it was tested at written into the file.

Questions people ask first
Before you commission
- What do you need from me to start?
- The product, its finished size, the material and its exact thickness, and the machine. If you know your kerf value, send it; if not, tell me the machine and material and I will work from tested figures and confirm on the test cut.
- Do you design for a specific laser, or will the file work on any machine?
- The geometry works anywhere, but kerf allowance is machine and material specific. I set it for the machine you name. If you later move to a different machine, send me the new details and I will re-cut the allowance rather than you reworking the file.
- Can I sell products cut from the file?
- Yes. Commercial licence is included with every commission — you may cut and sell the finished product without limit. What you may not do is resell the file itself as a digital product.
- What if the file does not cut correctly on my machine?
- Send me a photo of the result and the settings you used. If the geometry is at fault I correct it at no charge. That is the reason every file is test-cut before delivery rather than after.
- How much does a custom laser cut file cost?
- Custom design is priced by the time the work takes — mostly the number of parts, how much has to fit together, and whether artwork needs redrawing. You get a fixed quote and a timeline within one business day of sending your brief, before any work starts.
- How long does a custom laser cut design take?
- Three to seven days for most commissions, including the test cut. Products with many interlocking parts take longer, and rush work is possible — say so in your brief.
